Despite the fact that end of mainstream support ended for SQl Server 2008 R2 earlier this year, Microsoft have released SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 is available for download at the SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 download page.
  • This service pack contains fixes from all 8 of the Cumulative Updates that were released since SP2 for SQL Server 2008 R2. This is a considerable number of fixes, so make sure you test patching before you deploy them in a production environment.
  • You must be running SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 in order to apply this update. You can download previous Service Packs here.
  • Support for 2008 R2 SP2 ends 13th October 2015, so really you wanto install SP3 to extend support.
  • The build number for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 is 10.50.4000.0.
  • The build for SP3 is 10.50.6000.34.
  • Remember to download the correct version that you require as there are several version available depending on 32 bit/64 bit etc, and these service packs can be capacious, and you don’t want to waste bandwidth/time downloading the wrong one.
