Ive yet to write up in any detail on the No Holds Barred Competition, but frankly seeing as this write-up is going to be a lot simpler and shorter I’m going to start here.

The competition for September is called “Mega Melee”. This Single Battle competition allows for you to use only Pokémon that are capable of Mega Evolution. To be clear, despite a team of 3-6 being added, only 1 Pokémon will be used during each match.

So I’ve thought about who I’m going to take and write a short post on each one. I’m going to discuss their usage, their weakness, and make use of Pokémon Showdown and their Damage Calculator.

Mega Slowbro

Slowbro @ Slowbronite Ability: Regenerator EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD Bold Nature - Toxic - Slack Off - Scald - Iron Defense


OK, let’s get the elephant out of the room, and touch briefly about that shell. Just look at that poor guy will you?! It’s not actually SlowBro but Shellder who has Mega Evolved. That’s the face of sadness right there.

Despite the design, it’s a serious competitor in this game, as it can wall physical opponents and wear them down thanks to poison/burn damage. This will put pressure on the opponent to hit hard. Against a physical attacker, burn will reduce their chance of getting the win even less likely.

It’s ability in Shell Armour basically removes the opponent from being lucky and turning a guaranteed 2HKO into a OHKO, which comes in useful when you need to use Slack Off.

You will need to lose a turn and setup Iron Defense, however Slack Off can be used to recover after the fact. For example, against M-Tyranitar you’ll lose out one on one:

  • 252 Atk Tyranitar-Mega Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 146-174 (37 - 44.1%) – guaranteed 3HKO after sandstorm damage
  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 122-146 (35.7 - 42.8%) – guaranteed 3HKO
But factor in just one Iron Defense and the damage story changes dramatically:
  • 252 Atk Tyranitar-Mega Crunch vs. +2 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 74-90 (18.7 - 22.8%) – 69.7% chance to 4HKO after sandstorm damage
Keep in mind that M-Tyranitar is using a STAB boosted, super-effective move in Crunch, with it’s attack stat at a hard hitting 164.

Mega Salamence is another physical attacker that M-SlowBro will wall. The below calc is with Adamant nature

  • 252+ Atk Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 70-83 (17.7 - 21%) – possible 5HKO
And even with a DD boost, things do not look much better:

+2 252+ Atk Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 139-164 (35.2 - 41.6%) – guaranteed 3HKO

Fact of the matter is Slowbro could match the boosts like-for like with Iron Defense. And on the offence, M-Slowbro can recover easily with Slack Off and hit with Scald + Toxic, or maybe even hold out for a burn from Scald. Andwhilst Ice Beam would OHKO M-Salamence, there’s more merit going with Scald.

  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Ice Beam vs. 44 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 392-464 (114.6 - 135.6%) – guaranteed OHKO.
Whilst Regenerator is usually very useful, in this competition it has no value as you cannot switch in/switch out. I recommend going with Oblivious. Mega Evolve as soon as possible, except where you may be susceptible to Taunt users, in which case Mega Evolve after using  Iron Defense. A list of all Taunt users in this competition is here.

Base 130 Special Attack and STAB on Scald means that it’s offence is not bad and will more than contribute to wearing down teams. It also helps from being blocked by Steel types: contrast Scald vs Ice Beam against M-Steelix:

  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Scald vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 162-192 (45.7 - 54.2%) – 47.3% chance to 2HKO
  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 61-72 (17.2 - 20.3%) – possible 5HKO
And the same comparison against M-Scizor:
  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Scald vs. 252 HP / 148 SpD Scizor-Mega: 93-111 (27 - 32.2%) – guaranteed 4HKO
  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 148 SpD Scizor-Mega: 35-41 (10.1 - 11.9%) – possible 9HKO
And Scald is just as effective against neutral types:

0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 243-286 (158.8 - 186.9%) – guaranteed OHKO


Basically any Special Attacker  is a threat. With it’s Special Defence at 80 it’s susceptible to being 2HKO. For example, mixed attacker Abomasnow has an outside chance to 2HKO:

68 Atk Abomasnow-Mega Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 164-194 (41.6 - 49.2%) – 19.1% chance to 2HKO after hail damage

Even Mega Houndoom has a guaranteed 2HKO:

  • 252 SpA Houndoom-Mega Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowbro-Mega: 332-392 (84.2 - 99.4%) – guaranteed 2HKO
Pretty much all Ghost and Dark types not called Banette are going to be effective, as though M-Banette can take out Mega Slowbro in 3HKO, this is not taking into account an Iron Defense boost:
  • 252+ Atk Banette-Mega Shadow Claw vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 140-168 (35.5 - 42.6%) – guaranteed 3HKO
With one Iron Defense boost this becomes a possible 5HKO. Of course, Mega Banette could fire off a Taunt,  preventing any further boosts, but even then Banette’s poor Special Defense stats means it will lose out to scald in in 3 hits.
  • 252+ Atk Banette-Mega Shadow Claw vs. +2 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 72-86 (18.2 - 21.8%) – possible 5HKO
Let’s contrast this with Mega Gengar, who has a high chance of a OHKO.
  • 252 SpA Gengar-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowbro-Mega: 384-452 (97.4 - 114.7%) – 81.3% chance to OHKO
Meanwhile Mega SlowBro has only a 8% chance to 2HKO.
  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Scald vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gengar-Mega: 114-135 (43.5 - 51.5%) – 8.2% chance to 2HKO
Funnily enough, switch Scald out for Psychic, and the chances for a OHKO are the same as they are for M-Gengar. But even though the numbers are evenly matched, in the world of turn-based combat, the fastest always wins. And I would certainly not advocate using Psychic over Scald.
  • 0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gengar-Mega: 254-302 (96.9 - 115.2%) – 81.3% chance to OHKO

Final Thoughts

So in this competition, how much of a threat is Mega Slowbro? Even against some of the hardest hitting Pokémon in the game, will it’s credentials as a physical wall remain intact, or will it’s wall, and reputation, crumble under the pressure?

As we have seen form the numbers, offensively M-Slowbro can cope with a decent range of opponents with Scald, thanks to it’s decent Special Attack and STAB boost. Central to this is taking a hit setting up Iron Defense and using Slack Off to wear down those more resilient opponents. But M-Slowbro is going to suffer against any opponent with a better than average Special Attack.
